Project Overview
Ternesse Golf & Country Club is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious parkland courses in the Antwerp region of Belgium. Characterized by its lush fairways, impeccably manicured greens, and a magnificent canopy of mature trees, the course offers an intimate playing experience where every hole feels like a private sanctuary.
The objective of this project was to capture the course in its peak condition. By documenting the seamless harmony between the classic parkland architecture and the vibrant Belgian nature, the goal was to create a visual narrative that showcases Ternesse as the premier destination for golfers seeking both tranquility and a high-level technical challenge.
The photography Challenge
The greatest strength of a parkland course—its dense, lush greenery—is also a photographer’s most significant challenge. Unlike a coastal links course where the horizon is open and the sun can dip low across the entire terrain, a parkland setting is defined by verticality and heavy shadows.
The main obstacle was navigating the "monochromatic green" trap; I had to find a way to distinguish between the various textures and shades of the grass and foliage without the images becoming flat. Additionally, the high density of mature trees meant that timing was everything. I had to meticulously map out the sun’s trajectory for each hole, determining exactly when the light would penetrate the canopy to illuminate the fairways without creating harsh, distracting shadows.
THE APPROACH
To overcome these challenges, my approach was centered on "Light Mapping and Texture." Instead of a standard shoot, I spent time studying the course's micro-climates to capture the interplay of light and leaf.
- Golden Hour Precision: I utilized the very first and last moments of light to find those rare windows where the sun sits low enough to peek between the trunks, creating long, dramatic shadows that provide depth to the fairways.
- Color Grading: I focused on capturing the subtle contrast between the darker forest edges and the vibrant, sun-soaked greens to ensure a diverse palette of natural tones.
- The Perspective of the Trees: By incorporating low-angle shots and framed compositions through the foliage, I aimed to emphasize the "enclosed" and grand feeling that defines the Ternesse experience.
The result
The result is a stunning collection of images that truly brings the "parkland soul" of Ternesse to life. The photographs showcase a perfect balance between the technical perfection of the greens and the wild, majestic beauty of the surrounding forest.
Every hole is presented with its own unique character, highlighting the meticulous work of the greenkeeping team while celebrating the natural heritage of the estate. These visuals provide Ternesse Golf with a high-end portfolio that captures the serene, elite atmosphere that members and guests have come to love.
